In honor of “Trippin on the Moon” weekend, we asked you to tell us about your first time dancing at the Pavilion. Here were answers from some of our fabulous Pines Patrons:

Larry Wilson: Memorial Day Weekend 1991 Michael Jorba. Blew me away!

Bryan E Hale: I don’t remember my first time at Pavilion, but the boys who woke up in my bed told me I had fun.

Patty Rosado: ‎1985 — I believe it was Michael Fierman and have been loving my second home for 25 years!!! Oh how I love thee Fire Island Pines!

Chris DeCarlo: May 19/20, 2001. I don’t remember the DJ but it was my first weekend on Fire Island ever and I met a boy at the Pavilion that night. 9 years later we’re still together.

David Goodhand: I was taken there at 19 by Andrew Kirtzman, one of the current owners, in the summer of 1982. Robbie Leslie was the DJ, and heplayed “Can We Try Again” — which became the first 12″ dance single I ever bought. David Goodhand @Larry — I still have those Memorial Day 1991 tapes! But Michael Jorba, Labor Day 1990, was the best night ever. He mixed Pet Shop Boys “Somewhere” into “Electric Dreams”.

Stephen Titus: It is all a blur.

Christopher Davis: My first time was in 2000 with my friends Don & Gary. I don’t remember the DJ but I remember the magic of seeing a room full of beautiful people dancing with smiles on their faces to the amazing thump,thump,thump of the music. I remember the quirkiness of the slanted dance floor and how the mirrors fogged up due to the mass of sweaty bodies. It was as though my dreams of leaving Louisiana had finally been realized and I was experiencing heaven on earth.

Adam Gargani: ‎1992. Not sure i stopped dancing since.

Alan Flippen: July 4 1994. I was daytripping out for a friend’s clambake and was persuaded to stay the night. Have no idea who the DJ was, but would be curious to know, if records still exist. The first time I remember paying attention to the DJ’s name on Fire Island was when Susan Morabito played the Morning Party in 1995 (my first season having a house there), because my friends told me this was a Very Big Deal. As best I can recall, the first time I went to the Pavilion specifically knowing and getting excited about a DJ was Michael Fierman and Buc, July 4, 1998. The blast of heat, sound and bodies was overwhelming the first few times. It helped to go with veterans who could show you around. Now (gasp) I’m one of them.

The major events include:

➢ Friday, August 13th. Tracy Young opens the weekend with an all-night blow-out party at Pavilion beginning at midnight, with James Anderson upstairs spinning the underwear party lounge.

➢ Saturday, August 14th , 1pm at Deck: Hector Fonseca plays a major dance party at the pool deck, with frozen drinks, bottle service at the cabanas and an explosive dance floor scene.

➢ Saturday, August 14th, midnight at Pavilion: Moto Blanco, the European DJ/producer superstars fresh off their incredible performance at Pines Party.

➢ Sunday August 15th at 1pm: Corey Craig spins his weekly Soaked dance party at Deck.

➢ Sunday, August 15th at 6pm: Pines sensation Vito Fun blows out a special early Sunday Middle Tea, beginning right after the beach party.

➢ Sunday, August 15th, midnight at Pavilion: White-hot DJ Paulo plays a weekend-ending all-night party.

The weekend will also include the Pines’ favorite weekly institutions, including the weekend kick-off party at the pool deck, Biergarten, Friday at 11pm; Showtune Monday at 9:30pm, starring VJ Tony Built, and the famous Low, Middle and High Teas throughout the weekend.

Q: You’re playing Pavilion on a key night of the summer – Sunday night of Pines Party weekend. What are your thoughts about this? What do you like about the Pavilion?

A: Everything! I love the place, the history behind it, the crowd, the sound, the lights by Guy Smith – my favorite lighting guy in the world. It’s the perfect package for a club. I’ve only played there once before, back in 2003. So I’m looking forward to bringing my sound back to blow the roof off the place. I’ve played Pines Party and Independance on the Island. I’ve been busy preparing stuff in the studio for months for my return to the Pavilion, so I’m very excited.

Q: How long have you been a DJ and where do you spin now?

A: I have been a DJ for 15 years. I travel a lot now. I was at Heaven in London for nine years as the main floor resident on Saturday nights and gave it up to start playing more around the world. This year alone I have played for Sydney Harbour Party, White Party Palm Springs T Dance, San Diego Pride, San Fran Pride and London Pride. That’s just the big parties…

Q: What’s the most exciting party you’ve ever spun and why?

A: Pines Party 2001 was one of the highlights because it was my first time on the Island; Sydney Mardi Gras 2000 was a great one for me too, as that was my first Mardi Gras; White Party Tea Dance this year… they all rank as my favorites, because everything has just come together to create a perfect night for all those that came. For a club night, Fresh in San Francisco is consistently my favorite place to spin. The venue, the crowd, its just one of those magical places.

Q: What artists are coming out with the best music today, in your opinion?

A: Oh my, far too many to mention. Freemasons, Moto Blanco, Tony Moran, Rosabel, they are all consistent; new kids on the blocks Cahill, Wideboys and 7th Heaven are all great too. It’s nice that music is making a comeback with vocals and big melodies. For a while it was looking like it was going in a strange direction.

Q: What in your mind makes a great party?

A: It’s a combination of music, the crowd, the lighting and the staff at the venue, even the door greeter can have an impact on your night.

Q: What is exciting for you about spinning at Pavilion?
A:The history, the people, the island – it’s just legendary.

Q: How did you come up with the idea to spin a classics
set this Saturday night?
A: I love classics. When I performed at the Pines Party, twice, I noticed they love their classics, and that was my high. So, I want to bring that feeling back.

Q: What in your mind makes a great party?
A: A great party is the energy of the people, ready to release, leaving everything behind for that night. When the club, the DJ, the sound, and the lights all come together.

Q: What artists are coming out with the best music today, in your opinion?
A: There are a few out there that are favorites. Some of mine are, of course, Lady Gaga, Kim Sozzi, Jeanie Tracy, Christina Aguilera, Tamara Wallace, Jennifer Hudson, Donna Summer, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Adam Lambert, oh God, the list can go on…

Q: What’s the most exciting party you’ve ever spun and why?
A: One of the most memorable events to me has got to be the Pines Party, hands down. It just felt like I had this wild dream, and that it came true. The crowd, the atmosphere, the positive energy, the magic – I will never ever forget that night.

On July 17th, Vito Fun continues his birthday celebration on Fire Island in the Pines. Marketing Director, Jessica Resler, sits down with Vito Fun to discuss his thoughts on expanding his sound after Middle Tea and into Pavilion at midnight.

Q: You’ve become a virtual institution in the Pines because of the phenomenal success of Middle Tea. But this Saturday night you’ll perform at the Pavilion at night for the first time in your career. How do you feel about that?

A: I’m honored. The Pavilion is a gay landmark and a piece of gay history. Some of the world’s best DJs have walked through its doors. I’m totally ready to turn it out.

Q: You’ll be spinning Middle Tea before your night-time debut. How will the performances be different?

A: Middle Tea has a distinct pop personality. But I’m a really diverse DJ who has several different sounds to accommodate nearly any kind of party. I have tons of music and tons of remixes that I never get to play at Middle Tea. I feel confident conquering nearly any party that someone throws at me (or for me). A lot of DJs focus on one sound and make it their career; my focus has been on the parties.

Q: What will you do to keep the crowd dancing deep into the night?

A: Oh, I’ve got some secrets lined up. I like to whip the crowd into a frenzy by building up the energy all night. I keep it going until security asks me to leave or the lights go on. Also, as a DJ I’ve logged more time spinning in the Pavilion than anyone else. I know the crowd well because I’m frequently dancing in
the Pavilion, and I know the sound system as well as the person who built it. I have home team advantage.

Q: How long have you been a DJ in New York and where else have you spun?

A: 2010 marks my 12th year as a DJ in New York City. I started in the late 90′s spinning at the infamous Tunnel nightclub. I’ve been booked around the world for several amazing parties, including Carnival in
Brazil.

Q: How have you celebrated your birthday so far?

A: With a nice quiet weekend on Fire Island with my friends and family – though I got a great early birthday serenade at Middle Tea this past weekend. This weekend is going to be crazy. I’m fully rested and ready to deliver.
