A Q and A with DJ Kitty Glitter – performing in the Pavilion this Saturday night

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome DJ Kitty Glitter to her first DJ night at the Pavilion.  She’s fresh off of Mardis Gras and Sleaze Ball in Australia and ready to turn it out in the Pines for 4th of July weekend.  Our esteemed Entertainment Director, the handsome Vance Garrett, sat down with Kitty to talk about DJ-ing, the name behind the Glitter, and her rise to DJ stardom from Drag Queen du jour.  Read all about it here and come see Kitty in the Pavilion this Saturday night.

How did you get the name Kitty Glitter?

My star sign is a Leo, so I knew I wanted to be a pussycat of some sort…Kitty Litter came to mind, but I didn’t want a trashy image, so I added the G to litter and knew I could be as glamorous as I wanted, or as trashy as I wanted just by dropping the “G”!

How did you start DJ-ing?

I had been doing drag shows for 10 years when I won “Sydney’s Favorite Drag Queen” at our annual DIVA (Drag Industry Variety Awards) in 2006. It was at that point, I decided I wanted to add more fabulousness to my character, and music has always been my greatest passion…so it was only natural to combine the two. I went on to win MOST POPULAR DJ for two years running in ’07 & ’08… and the rest is history!

How did you get your first break?

When I decided I wanted to add the DJ element to my act, I went out and purchased all the equipment, with the intention to get my mixing skills perfect in my own time at home before playing in a club.  However, the minute word spread as to what I was planning, the venues I was doing shows in threw me into the deep water and I practically learned on the job…and fast!

Where do you DJ now?

I have many residencies in Sydney, and I am also booked all over Australia for dance parties and special events. I have done New Zealand Gay Ski Week for the last 2 years, and also the Devious Parties.  I’m back there in late July and also GATSKIWEEKNZ-2010 September.  I have played my first party in New York, and I am featured at Toronto Pride on the 3rd and 4th of July this year. I am hoping these acts, and playing Fire Island Pines, will open doors to many more International opportunities for me in the future.

What’s your style of music?

I am most popular for playing uplifting vocal house music, that usually gets people with their hands in the air and singing along, I like to throw in a little bit of deep house, electro, retro, and of course anthemic classics, so that at some point i get to please the whole spectrum of musical genres. Its hard for one DJ to please everybody, but I do my best to make it my mission to leave everyone dancing to something they love.
